In this line of business, there is a lot that goes on behind-the-scenes. What you see is definitely NOT what you get, and I can’t emphasize enough how important the safety and well-being of these precious little ones is to us.
We want to show an example of how we safely photograph babies.
Meet Jagger. At the time of this image – he was 6 months old and sitting, although still a little top-heavy and not stable. He was definitely not stable enough to balance on the rocking horse safely. So in order to make the shot, we need to take several images and combine them in post-production. Baby will never ever be balanced – not even for a second. No shot is worth it. All shots like this are created in post-production.
So here’s how we set up the shot:
The next step is to overlay the 2 images – one on top of the other, lining up the horses exactly. Mask out mom using layer masks to reveal only the part of the image you want to show in the final.
Result?
A very safe, very adorable Jagger and his rocking horse.
Why are we publishing trade secrets? Because we believe safety matters more. We want parents and would-be photographers to understand that what they see in professional photographers’ portfolios, websites, and blogs may not be as simple as they see. A professional photographer will always create these images using photo-magic and never, ever – not even for a second – let go of baby for the sake of a shot like this.

Totally sharing this. People need to understand this so they’re not endangering sweet little babies. Nicely explained, Darcy!
